Manuel Mathieu - Compagnon des arts et des lettres du Québec

Prix et reconnaissances

On June 9, 2025, Manuel Mathieu received the insignia of the Ordre des arts et des lettres du Québec, a prestigious distinction bestowed to personalities whose exemplary achievements reflect the artistic and literary development of Quebec. Discover the tribute paid to him by the CALQ.

Born in Port-au-Prince, Manuel Mathieu is a poet whose expression goes beyond words. Painting, sculpture, video, ceramics and installation: every medium is a fragment of his language, a way of exploring memory, solitude, survival and desire. His work, on the border of abstraction and figurative representation, blurs the boundaries between the intimate and the political, the past and the present.

Shining a light on human connection, Manuel Mathieu’s work is an ode to freedom laced with hope. The emotional resonance of his abstract, visceral work has won over the contemporary art world. Not yet 40, he was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal, and his work is part of prestigious public and private collections.

As a tribute to his grandmother, who welcomed him to Québec and encouraged him to paint, he has established a fund to acquire artworks from emerging Canadian artists who have been underrepresented at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Marie-Solanges Apollon’s star continues to shine and guide an artist who is on a steady upward trajectory.
